Imagine yourself stirring your cup of tea every morning with one of these beauties. Pure class. I found an image of them, by chance, a few days ago and couldn’t resist the temptation of wanting to know more and more, so I contacted the artist, Mr. Pinky Diablo, and he told me a lot of things; actually, so funny that they will give me the excuse for being a lazy writer and simply transcribe his comments.
Pinky Diablo is the alter ego of Texas artist and teacher, Tom Sale. Ten years ago when Pinky sprung full-grown from the head of Sale, he came fully developed with his own aesthetic, family history and criminal rap sheet. When Pinky began his journey, one of his goals was to bring issues of good living and good dying to his flock. Naturally, Pinky began to gravitate towards a personal symbolism which included watercolors of skeletons in hell as a warning to the ridiculous excesses of our modern culture. He had seen a similar spoon made of plastic, and, since Pinky only eats from fine silverware, he had to teach himself some metalworking skills to create his skulls.
Pinky doesn’t use a pattern. Each spoon is hand cut and polished with no template. The spoons are all vintage silver plate and all of them have scratches and a bullet hole to remind the user of their fleeting time on Earth.
So what do people do with these spoons? There are undocumented reports that they are being used to stir morning coffee and tea, bringing a daily reminder of the beauty of life to the slightly morbid caffeine freaks amongst us. Wall hanging. Kitchen decoration. And Pinky’s favourite, the ritual beans and rice stirrer for a Louisiana clan. Do with them whatever you want. Personally, I would like to carry one of them with me always, just in case there’s a chance to stir something.
Do you want one of these fascinating items? They cost 45 $ each and you can get them through the artist himself at www.pinkydiablo.com
